Editor's Note

Welcome to 2014 and another awesome year celebrating our joint love of Celtic music. I started the Celtic Music Magazine over thirteen years ago as way to introduce Celtic music lovers to some of the incredible Celtic musicians I found online. I used the slogan "changing the way you hear Celtic music" as our trumpet and mission statement.

The magazine evolved from an MP3.com newsletter into a website of free Celtic MP3s, then into a CD review website, and finally into a podcast. Now I'm looking into using video as an additional way to share all of the great Celtic music I am introduced to each week.

Sharing Celtic music through new media was the old goal. I think we did that quite successfully, winning two Podcast Awards, earning thousands of subscribers, and millions of downloads of my podcasts. I started posting the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast on YouTube several months ago. Many of those videos are also getting tens of thousands of views.

I'm not sure where new media is going. I also feel that I've grown beyond just "changing the way you HEAR Celtic music." It's now about changing your world through Celtic music.

Over the past thirteen years, I've had thousands of emails from Celtic music lovers telling me how my magazine and podcast have helped to change their world. A decade ago, the only way you could hear new Celtic music was if you were lucky enough to have Fiona Ritchie's Thistle & Shamrock radio program on your local NPR station. I never was so lucky.

I never had an opportunity to explore the world of Celtic music outside of what I could see live at local Celtic festivals, Renaissance festivals, and occasional pubs. You may be in the same position.

Well, I am happy to offer a free solution. I offer you a chance to not only hear Celtic music, but to change your world through the music in this magazine, in our podcast, and hopefully, in a new Celtic TV show on YouTube.

You are an incredible person. Thank you for being on this journey with me. Thank you for allowing me to change your world with Celtic music.

Slainte!

Will You Help Sponsor a New Video Show?

I have an idea for a new Celtic video show. I need your help to make it happen.

I love the way the format of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. It's designed to give you maximum music listening without too much vocal interruption. I've had a LOT of great feedback about that over the years.

The downside is that I don't talk too much about the bands on the show. Instead, you have to visit their website and seek them out on your own. Don't get me wrong that's awesome. But I want to do more. I want to introduce you better to the bands in each show. But to do that, I need your financial support.

My goal is to produce a four-part pilot series called Irish Celtic News. In each show, I will give you a quick run down about each of the bands in the latest episode of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. I'll also share some "what's new" news about the bands. The show will "air" on my YouTube Channel about a week or so after the podcast is released.

I don't expect it to be too long, but I want to make it fun, entertaining, and of course educational. And if I can pull together a video team, I might add in some additional clips from festivals or interviews that I might be able to pull together.

This is a BIG project. So I'm gonna need help. But to make this happen, first and foremost, I need to raise money to pay for some of the production.

Right now, I'm holding a crowdfunding campaign on my website for my new CD, How America Saved Irish Music. As part of that campaign, I'm raising money to pay for this project as well. Yes, it's a dual fundraising campaign. But if you actually sponsor the 4-part series (one of the options), then that money will go straight to production costs for the video series.

You can sponsor the show and/or support my new album right here: http://celticmusic.org/2014/pre-order-america/

You will find the donation and sponsor info at the end of the page.

Though if you'd like to support my new album, your purchase of it too will all go towards the overall fundraising goal. You can hear the first single from the album "A Stor Mo Chroi" right here:

Greetings,

This is a special message from the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast I have two things to share with you:

First, the podcast website is still undergoing maintenance. I can't post a new show in the podcast feed. So in the meantime, you can listen to show #150 on the website,

OR you can download the MP3 of show #150: The Craic Is Free! (58 MB) right now.

I hope to have it back in podcast form in a couple days.

Second, I just have one giant request that will bring you even more great indie Celtic music. And that is...

Vote for the Best Celtic Music of 2013

Do you want to hear the absolute best of the best music of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast in 2013? Then I need you to vote for it!

Every year since 2007, I have published a Best of the Year episode of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. Those shows are consistently my most-popular shows because YOU voted for your favorite songs. Last year, I was forced to close the Celtic Top 20 polls because of low votes. But I want to bring the Best of the Year show back. And so...

The polls are now open.

I need You to Vote for Your favorite Celtic music of 2013. Here's how:

  • Voting is done by episode.
  • Just pick your favorite song or tune in each show.
  • If you don't remember an episode, go listen to the show again!
  • You have about three weeks to vote.

Once I close the polls, I will find the most-popular music. In March, I will release a Best of 2013 episode of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast.

But again. The only way to make this the best is by voting! So please. Do yourself a favor.

Cast your vote today!

Editor's Note

A couple weeks back, I was going through past submissions to the podcast. I realized I missed a LOT of indie Celtic bands who submitted music last year. Now I'm trying to do some major catch up. That's good news for you because it means I just released show #151: A Brilliant Collection of Celtic Music.

I also made a couple cool new changes to the podcast shownotes this year. In the past, I've had people suggest I start using the Apple podcast format so you can skip tracks. Or they tried to find out who an artist was and they couldn't.

I don't have the ability to make Apple audio files and I also find it limiting for my non-Apple users. However, helping you find who's who, I can make that easier. Starting with show #151, I added the time that each song begins. Now you can see at 8:22 into the show, Burning Bridget Cleary's song begins to play.

I would love to do that with all of the other podcasts in the past, but alas, that will take a LOT of time to do... UNLESS we crowdsource it. Next time you listen to one of my past shows, make notes as to what time each songs begins. You can email me that info or post it directly in the shownotes. I'll get it added.

Perhaps together, we can make this podcast better than ever in 2014!

Something shocking happened to me last week. There was an error in transferring data from my old Song Henge web host to the new one. The entire site and all of the membership data was lost. Yesterday, CelticMusicPodcast.com also crashed and is still not yet back up. I'm still a little shaken by these events.

"That which does not kill us makes us stronger", Friedrich Nietzsche said. I'm still trying to grow from these problems. It's not easy. However, thanks to my friend Jan, I now have all of the membership data in a compiled in a spreadsheet. My friend Amber is helping me get the website back online. It's slow-going, but at least it's going. With any luck, I will email you next week to announce the all-new Song Henge website.

In the meantime, I compiled shownotes for the next Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. I was playing catchup with submissions to the podcast last year, when I realized I had a lot of Celtic rock submissions that hadn't been played. I decided to highlight these bands by doing an exclusive podcast special on Celtic rock. I should have that show up in the next couple o'days, but if the website is still down, check out facebook. I will have a link to the MP3 directly.

If you CAN access the website, I want to ask you one more time to cast your vote for the Best Irish & Celtic Music of 2013. You can vote for your favorite song in each episode of the podcast last year. Just head on over to http://celticmusicpodcast.com/vote/ and vote!

Thank you SO much for all your patience and support of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. You are awesome!

I have good news at last. But first, I am happy to announce that show #152 of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast is now online. This week, you're gonna experience a Celtic Rock Invasion!

I suppose this is also a good to time mention that if you like Celtic Rock music, we have a compilation CD called The Secret World of Celtic Rock. It, um, rocks! ;-)

DONATIONS REPORT NOW ONLINE

If you're not familiar with my compilations, a portion of the sale of each compilation benefits Celtic non-profits. I finally posted my Donation Report for 2012 and 2013. You can see all of the donations I made over the last two years and who the recipients were.

Donations are a little down during the last two years from 2011. That's because some of my super-popular albums on iTunes were replaced by other albums. It bums me out. But that's what marketing is all about. If each of you bought Victims of Irish Music or Irish Celtic Music today, the albums would rock to the top of the charts and we could donate even more to those Celtic non-profits.

Nevertheless, the albums are still selling extremely well. I'm donating over $2000 a year thanks to your generous purchases of these compilations. Thank you!

WEBSITE TROUBLES SLOWLY BEING RESOLVED

When last I wrote, I lamented my website troubles. I was trying to migrate my sites to a new web host... during one of the busiest seasons for a Celtic music publisher (pre-St Patrick's Day). That wasn't too bright!

Well, I decided to postpone this whole moving web host thing, for now at least. Whatever the case, I'm getting stuff back in order. You can now sign up to the all-new Song Henge, which is now merged with the Celtic Music CD Store.

Trad Music Tour of Ireland

NEW SPONSOR FOR THE IRISH & CELTIC MUSIC PODCAST

The best news of all right now is the sponsorship of the Irish Tourism Group. They are hosting a Trad Music Tour of Ireland this summer. I can't tell you how many people emailed me asking if I was doing a Celtic Invasion of Ireland this summer. Nope. We are going to Wales. So this sponsorship was perfect. The Irish Tourism Group has something extra special planned, something, I would LOVE to be a part of.

They're gonna take you to recitals, sessions, demonstrations of traditional Irish music and dance. This sounds really brilliant. Plus, they're hitting all the cool sites that I love in Ireland, like the Dingle Peninsula, The Cliffs of Moher and Gougane Barra.

Ah Gougane Barra! That was one of my favorite spots from my first trip. I remember beautiful hills, the cool air, the serenity that was only marred by the sound of sheep on the hills. It was spectacular. My friend Jamie and I still talk about how wonderful it was.

Anyway, if you want to take a trip to Ireland this summer, visit their website or call 1-877-298-7205 . Make sure you tell them that you found out about it through the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast.

MY NEWEST ALBUM TOPS THE CHARTS ON AMAZON

The last bit of news I want to share is about the official release of How America Saved Irish Music. All I can say is WOW! Thank you for your support of the album and my Top the Charts event. The album peaked at #1 on Amazon for British & Celtic Folk albums, #1 for Traditional Folk, and #1 for Miscellaneous. It hit #5 of all Folk albums and it climbed to #236 of ALL ALBUMS on Amazon. To me, that is BRILLIANT!

So again, thank you for your support of my album. And thank you to for generous support of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. YOU make it happen, and I love you for it!

Slainte!
Marc Gunn, The Celtfather

PS. Tomorrow is the last day you can vote for the best songs in the podcast last year. Next week, I will compile my Best Irish & Celtic Music of 2013 episode. Vote now.

Announcing the Best Irish & Celtic Music of 2013

The countdown is full on. There's just ten more days until St. Patrick's Day. I have some big plans for St. Patrick's Week. It all starts next Monday. In the meantime, I finally finished recording the latest episode of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. It is th Best Irish & Celtic Music of 2013.

This whole year, I asked you to vote for your favorite songs in each show from last year. I compiled the results into an hour and half top 20 special highlighting your votes. Thank you for taking the time to make this great show.

DAILY CONCERTS FOR ST. PATRICK'S WEEK

Starting on Monday, March 10th, I'm holding daily concerts via Google Hangouts at 9am from Monday through Friday. Then I have my St. Patrick's Day shows at Beef O'Brady's on Friday evening and Five Points St. Patrick's Day Parade on Saturday afternoon here in Birmingham, Alabama.

A few days ago, I came up with the idea of doing a daily concert for the week before St. Patrick's Day. Then an idea struck me. Wouldn't it be amazing if we could organize a St Patrick's Week Internet Celtic Festival?!

Imagine your favorite Celtic musicians playing for you live online, some day next week. Wouldn't that be awesome!?

I would love to see that happen. Alas, I don't have the time to organize such an event this year... Do you?

If so, I would love to help you make it happen. We can use the Celtic Music Magazine as a place to post performance schedules all week long.

Will you help?

Either way, I hope you will join me on my YouTube page to watch my St. Patrick's Week performances from Monday through Friday at 9am.

17 CELTIC MUSIC DOWNLOADS FOR ST. PATRICK'S DAY

I have two more episodes of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast coming out next week. On Friday, I will also send out the my annual article "17 Celtic Music Downloads for St. Patrick's Day". I peeked at the list that my assistant, Jan, compiled. It looks fantastic. You're in for a lot of great free music!

Jesse Ferguson - The Butcher Boy

NEW CELTIC CDS

The Butcher Boy
by Jesse Ferguson
English-language folk songs presented with rich vocals and harmonies, combining traditional and contemporary folk influences.

Twa Corbies
by Celtic Mayhem
It's best described as Celtic music with and an "edge". Rockin Irish music to say the least. Toe-tappin', hand-clappin', foot-stompin' FUN. This new CD is by far the best. With a wild drive and sense of play, you won't get this music out of your head.

Songs My Father Sang
by Golden Bough
Margie Butler's lyrical vocals and fluid harp playing lay the groundwork for this collection of lovely Irish melodies and rousing, humorous pieces.

Pogue Mahone
by Shambolics
The Shambolics play raucous Celtic Rock with banjo, mandolin, accordion and various other instruments, if you want to dance the night away then party with the Shambolics.

Shantyman's Folly
by Whiskey Bay Rovers
A mix of pirate songs, traditional sea shanties, Irish drinking songs, and other songs of the sea; some done a cappella with up to six part harmonies, some with guitar, drum, penny whistle and recorder accompaniment.

The Piping Album
by Matt MacIsaac
This beautifully recorded solo bagpipe album by one of the world's best is a previously out-of-print, critically acclaimed record that immerses the listener in the near-surround sound of the drones and chanter as if one were playing the instrument.

This comes courtesy of Celtic Music Magazine, the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast and each of these incredible bands below who so graciously offered their music as free Celtic music downloads.

Four leaves clover

A Celtic Music Radio Show that Will Make You Quit Radio

The Irish & Celtic Music Podcast is the #1 Celtic podcast online. It has over 7,000 subscribers and receives over 100,000 downloads each and every month. In fact, it’s been downloaded over nine million times!!! It also won two awards for Best Podsafe Music in the Podcast Awards. The show comes out every couple weeks and has a passionate fan base, called Song Hengers, who receive even more free Celtic MP3s by supporting the podcast.

If you’re not familiar with podcasts, just think of a radio show, like Thistle & Shamrock, that you can download to your computer or listen online any time of the day and at your leisure. It’s a brilliant tool for discovering new Irish and Celtic music.

You can subscribe through one of these links below:

Is this St. Patrick’s Day Music Really Free?

I started giving away 17 awesome Celtic MP3s for St. Patrick’s Day in 2005. That makes this is the tenth edition of this article. Each year, more and more people download these free St. Patrick’s Day MP3s. So YES! This is absolutely free!

Every year, a bunch of Celtic bands submit MP3s to the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. Many give me permission to add some of their songs to Song Henge, the fan club and free Celtic music archive I mentioned above. When St. Patrick’s Day rolls around, we collect some of our favorite Celtic MP3s from the year into one giant zip file and give you permission to download the album entirely for free. It’s sort of like a best of the year sampler for Song Henge.

Best of all, you don’t need to subscribe to anything
to get the free St. Patrick’s Day music downloads!

All you have to do is click the link below!

What’s the catch?

My goal in giving away free Irish music is to help of the bands featured on the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast and the Celtic Music Magazine to find new fans. These bands want you to hear their music. With any luck, you will start following them. Then maybe see a show. Then buy every CD they ever release. Yes, we’re in it for the long term to make new Celtic music fans for these awesome bands.

So if you find a track by a band you love, then please, please, please, do the following…

  • Go to the band’s website
  • Listen to their music
  • Join their mailing list
  • Buy their CDs, digital downloads or swag, if you can
  • And then, TELL A FRIEND

Celtic Music Spotlight, Super Fast New Website

CELTIC MUSIC MAGAZINE

http://www.celticmp3s.com/

Celtic Music Magazine is the official newsletter of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast.  It is a monthly publication of Celtic music, news and culture by Celtic musician and podcast host, Marc Gunn. We are changing your world with Celtic music!

Celtic Music Spotlight

My new media empire is growing. Thanks to St. Patrick's Day, I finally broke through the video barrier. I wanted to record videos four years ago, but the technology was just too expensive and difficult to use. Now at last, I'm making videos with Google Hangouts and with my new video show--Celtic Music Spotlight.

I love that I can put the spotlight on indie Celtic bands. Earlier today, I was listening to Fiona Ritche's Thistlepod. That's her podcast that works in conjunction with her famous radio show Thistle & Shamrock. I haven't bothered with the podcast because all she did was post clips of songs from the actual show. With her long-running show and reputation, she could easily have the biggest podcast online. I guess I should be thankful, huh?

Anyway, she posted some interviews on her podcast that caught my eye. One was with Solas. I think it too was a snippet, but it made me realize that I now have the technology to do interviews. This gives me another chance to promote independent Celtic bands who don't have a record label like Solas has to promote their music. Instead, we do it the indie DIY way.

I'm brainstorming what form these interviews will take. In the meantime, stay subscribed for details to come. If you missed show #155, the Great St. Patrick's Day Music Extravaganza, then give it a listen. A new show will be online soon.

PODCAST MOVED TO NEW, FASTER-THAN-EVER SERVER!

I spent this whole year talking about moving the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast to a new server. I just now figured out WHY I needed one. It wasn't just the spammers who were using up all my web resources and forcing my web host to temporarily shut off my website. It turns out the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast had grown too big for the shared hosting it was on.

Okay, I sort of realized it earlier. I just didn't want to accept it. For good reason too. You see, the price of a good dedicated server is about ten times that of a shared server. But it was necessary.

Last week, I successfully migrated the website (and a few others of mine) to a new, fast server. It's now running at mock 11. A big thanks to my awesome web host, Lunarpages, who made the transition so perfectly smooth.

The downside of this migration is the price. As I said, it costs ten times as much as a basic server. Now, the show costs me about $650 per month (see the expenses) to run.

So let me send a HUGE THANKS to all of my Song Hengers. Your membership to the fan club makes an extra BIG difference. I have a family. So even $200 a month is a lot for me. But $650?! Wow!

If you love the podcast, there's no better day to subscribe. Because you will get not only all the great free content you've enjoyed for nearly ten years, but you will also get an Irish & Celtic Music Podcast coffee mug.

I guess you could say the podcast now offers two great ways to wake up in the morning! ;)

Thunderstorm Reels and Jigs

The Home of Indie Celtic Music Online
April 30, 2014
http://www.celticmp3s.com/

Celtic Music Magazine is the official newsletter of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast.  It is a 2-3 times per month publication of Celtic music, news and culture by Celtic musician and podcast host, Marc Gunn. We want to change your world with Celtic music!

Thunderstorms Reels and Jigs

There were thunderstorms rolling through North Alabama as I recorded the latest episode of the podcast--#157: Fizzy Pop Celtic Reels. It seems funny to me how people get worried when the storms come in. I know they worry about tornados. Birmingham has good reason. My neighborhood suffered a lot of damage from one such tornado just days before we moved in. And as a father, I think twice about safety.

Nevertheless, the storms just make me excited and happy. I could almost hear a fizzy pop reel rockin' the kitchen as storms crashed down last night? Can you picture it? I think the world needs an album of thunderstorm reels and jigs. That'd be awesome!

Speaking of reels and jigs, I just got a small cache of CDs from Poitin, the award-winning Celtic group from the Czech Republic. You can hear one of their tunes on episode #156: Open the Gates of Celtic Music of the podcast.

I worked out a special deal with the band. Join Song Henge in May and you will get a copy of Poitin's newest CD, Wish, as a free gift...while supplies last. Yes. This offer is only good for the first 10 people to join. So sign up today to get your copy of this awesome CD.

If you were excited to see my first video show, the Celtic Music Spotlight, I hope you will be patient with me. I am still planning episodes, but time has been against me recently. With any luck, I will publish a new episode next week.

FiS_2011_Sa_ 959

INTRODUCING THE CELTIC GEEK

Meanwhile, my new solo podcast, The Celtic Geek, is a tremendous success. This podcast is the town crier for both kinds of entertainment--Celtic AND Geek. This is my first venture into the world of non-music-centric podcasts. Every Monday, I offer updates about what's going on with my Celtic music empire. Then I talk about all things Celtic and/or Geek. And by "geek", I mean science fiction or fantasy. Later in the week, I publish a second show which covers thoughts on various topics.

The response is overwhelming. I'm never shy of content. I have a TON of awesome things to promote, and I LOVE promoting things that I LOVE!

If you like Celtic music and science fiction, then you might be a Celtic Geek. Check out the show.

DID YOU CHECK OUT THE TRAD MUSIC TOURS OF IRELAND

With the release of show #156, the sponsorship of Irish Tourism Groups' Trad Music Tours of Ireland came to an end. I was very excited about that sponsorship. I feel like a vacation tour business is the perfect sponsor for the podcast. But is it worth it for them? Does it interest you?

I would love your thoughts and feedback. Did you check out their website and look over their vacation package? If so, what did you think? If not, why not? Did the idea of the tour not interest you? What kind of vacation tour of Ireland does interest you?

If you want to check it out one last time, then visit http://www.irishtourism.com/celticmusicpodcast

And of course if you sign up, make sure you mention the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast.

Once again, I want to thank you. The podcast and magazine would be nothing without your smiling face listening and reading them. You are the reason why I want to change your world with Celtic music. I hope I may inspire you with Celtic joy

Slainte!

Celtic Brunch

CELTIC MUSIC MAGAZINE
The Home of Indie Celtic Music Online
May 20, 2014
http://www.celticmp3s.com/

Celtic Music Magazine is the official newsletter of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast.  It is a 2-3 times per month publication of Celtic music, news and culture by Celtic musician and podcast host, Marc Gunn. We want to change your world with Celtic music!

Greetings

With just two days left until I kick off my Celtic Invasion of Wales, I knew I had to finish an episode of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. You can now join me for a Celtic Music for Brunch.

Mother Egan's Irish Pub in Austin used to have a Celtic Brunch. The Tea Merchants played there every week for at least a year. It was a great way to get your toes tapping after church on Sunday. I still miss those events every time I turn on one of their albums. This show doesn't feature The Tea Merchants, however, members of the group do show up on the track by Jonathan Milton, another Austin Celtic musician.

This show will get your toes tapping. So stay tuned for more great Celtic music. If I can get it done in time, I plan to have a show that will be released on June 1st, the day I return from Wales... Cross your fingers for me.

MARC GUNN'S KICKSTARTER FOR SCI FI DRINKING SONGS

Twelve days ago, I released a new Kickstarter for my album Sci Fi Drinking Songs. I already reached my goal. Now I'm hoping to reach my first financial stretch goal. If I reach it, I plan to publish a booklet with more information about the album. You'll find songs inspired by Doctor Who, Firefly, Star Trek, Star Wars, and Lord of the Rings. If you like Celtic music and science fiction or fantasy, then check out the album at http://marcgunn.com/kickstarter.

Thanks so much for all your awesome support of my music. I will talk to you when I get home in June.

Slainte!
Marc Gunn, The Celtfather

PS. If you want to keep up with how the trip is going, then make sure you check out The Celtic Geek. That's my personal podcast of news and information. I hope to do a daily show while I'm in Wales. Subscribe or listen online at http://www.celtfather.com.

Celtic Music Podcast Goes Weekly

CELTIC MUSIC MAGAZINE
The Home of Indie Celtic Music Online
June 28, 2014
http://www.celticmp3s.com/

Celtic Music Magazine is the official newsletter of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast.  It is a 2-3 times per month publication of Celtic music, news and culture by Celtic musician and podcast host, Marc Gunn. We want to change your world with Celtic music!

Greetings

Are you keeping an eye on your Irish & Celtic Music Podcast feed? If so, then you probably noticed something awesome. The Podcast is now a WEEKLY show!

I came home from my Celtic Invasion of Wales with a bug to kick the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast into overdrive. I wanted a weekly show, just like my Celtic Geek podcast. So I polled my Song Hengers to figure out when I should release the show. Then I started publishing. There are four new episodes since I last published this newsletter! FOUR!

The latest is even themed. I made it fast-paced so you can work out with it--Workout With Celtic Music. Let me know how good it is for your workout. Then check back in EVERY WEDNESDAY for a new edition of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast

WELCOME TO OUR NEW REVIEWERS

The Celtic Music Magazine is always on the look out for Celtic music lovers who want to write reviews and articles to make the magazine better than ever. I am pleased to add some new reviewers to the website.

A special welcome to Rhonda Eudaly, Jack Baruzzini, Lloyd Clark, and Steven Ward. Keep an eye on the website for even more new reviews.

If you'd like to join my team of reviewers, then email me at editor@celticmp3s.com with Celtic Reviewer in the subject line. I'd love to have you join us.

BECOME A PATREON OF CELTIC MUSIC

You can become a Patron of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast through my new Patreon page.

For nine years, I published between 1-2 episodes per month. That came out to about 20 podcast episodes per year. This year, I want to do more. You can help insure that it happens. Become a patron of the podcast.

Patreon is one of the coolest crowdfunding sites I've seen for regular content creators like me. It puts the power in YOUR HANDS. You can make a donation to the podcast per episode released. If you make a $1 donation per episode and I only release one episode, then you only pay $1. You see, there's now a financial incentive for me to release more than one show per month.

It also benefits you. Your contribution means you're getting more shows than ever. You'll be able to download the show sometimes as early as Monday (as soon as it is finished) for just one buck an episode. You'll have early access. Donate $5 or more and you'll get to pick one MP3 from the show that I will send to you.

Best of all, if I raise $250 per episode, I will start donating 10% of the money back to Celtic non-profits. I've already raised $20,000 thanks to my compilation CDs. Just imagine how much more good we can do if I'm donating an extra $100 a month. That's an additional $1200 a year more than the 2-4 grand I'm already donating.

All in all, Patreon is one cool site. I hope you will consider supporting the podcast by making a Patreon donation.

But Remember, if you don't have the money to do so, don't sweat it. The Irish & Celtic Music Podcast has been and ever shall be a free show. It's mostly about promoting indie Celtic bands. So just keep listening and enjoying the music.

If you'd like to find out how to donate, go to http://celticmusicpodcast.com/patreon

I hope you're having a great Celtic Summer!

Slainte!
Marc Gunn, The Celtfather

6 New Celtic MP3s for You to Download

CELTIC MUSIC MAGAZINE
The Home of Indie Celtic Music Online
July 28, 2014
http://www.celticmp3s.com/

Celtic Music Magazine is the official newsletter of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast.  It is a 2-3 times per month publication of Celtic music, news and culture by Celtic musician and podcast host, Marc Gunn. We want to change your world with Celtic music!

Greetings

What a great summer it's been! I've had lots of gigs at farmer's markets, house concerts, festivals, and I even played at The Irish House in New Orleans. There, my 3-year old daughter got up on stage and shamelessly sang "Let It Go!" from the movie Frozen. She definitely has my dramatic flare on stage. I'm gonna bet she'll sing all the way to the beach this weekend.

The new weekly format of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast is running beautifully. I have a great working schedule. On Monday, I download new submissions and give them a listen. Then I start compiling the latest show. I record it and immediately upload it so my Patrons at the new Patreon site can download and start listening two days before it is officially released on Wednesday morning. The system isn't perfect, but so far [knock on wood], every Wednesday morning episode has been on time!

Right now, I have 10 patrons contributing $26 per episode. That's amazing! A special thanks to those Patrons!

This means I am just $4 an episode away from reaching my first Milestone Goal. When I do, I will release Seasons 2 and 3 of the podcast as ZIP files for easy downloading. Right now, you can download Season 1 as a free gift.

If you'd like to support me on Patreon. I would be very grateful. All you need to do is pledge $1 per episode to make a difference. Support me at http://celticmusicpodcast.com/patreon/

REVIEWERS STILL WANTED

We had a LOT of great reviews this month on the Celtic Music Magazine. However, I would like to add two more reviewers to my team to make sure all of these awesome Celtic bands get the recognition they deserve. Do you want to help?

Here's what you will need to do:

1. You will need to be on Facebook. That's where I distribute reviews.

2. You need to be a self-starter and willing to create content.

3. You will need to be a good writer and self-editor.

If you'd like to join my team of reviewers, then email me at editor@celticmp3s.com with Celtic Reviewer in the subject line. I'd love to have you join us.

WHEN DID YOU FIRST HEAR THE TERM "CELTIC MUSIC"?

I posted an interesting question this week on Facebook. I've been enjoying the responses:

When did you first hear the term "Celtic music"?

Did you hear of Irish music and Scottish music first or were the names always synonymous?

Post your response here or email me: https://www.facebook.com/celticpodcast/posts/737748929600558

Finally, I am super happy to announce that Omer Riff is back to posting MP3s on the website. We have SIX new Celtic MP3s this week. All of them are 100% free. So follow the links below to download.

Enjoy the rest of your summer.

Slainte!
Marc Gunn, The Celtfather

PS. I plan to migrate this mailing list to a new email server because I haven't really seen how the reverbnation list was any better. So in the coming weeks, I will email you with instructions on how you can move to the new mailing list. If you want to get started now, here are the two things you will need to do:

1. Go to http://celticmp3s.com/subscribe/ to join the new list.

2. You will receive an email confirmation. Click that the link and you will be subscribed.

NOTE: To avoid any problems, you should add a filter to your email client. Add editor@celticmp3s.com as a contact. Then create a filter that puts that email address straight into your inbox. If you have questions, feel free to email me. Just tell me first what email program you use.

3. Scroll to the bottom of this mailing list and click the unsubscribe link. It's instant and easy.

That's it. You're all set. And thank you for your continued membership to the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast and the Celtic Music Magazine!

Celtic Music Magazine is the official newsletter of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast.  It is a 2-3 times per month publication of Celtic music, news and culture by Celtic musician and podcast host, Marc Gunn. We want to change your world with Celtic music!

Greetings

I had a great summer. I had a lot of gigs. My family and I took vacations at the beach, New Orleans and in North Carolina. Now life returns to "normal." I drove my daughter to daycare yesterday morning. The weather was so pleasant I took a walk in the park. I could almost feel a reprieve from the heat. Ah! I can't wait til fall begins and the fall episodes of the podcast.

In the meantime, I am back at work. I continue to release weekly episodes of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. Right now, I now have 15 Patrons of the Podcast donating $46 per episode. That means, I am about 2/3 away from having my server costs covered entirely by my patrons. You're also $4 away from getting a two-hour Celtic Rock special. If I hit $50 per episode, I'm gonna compile some of the best Celtic rock songs I know into an incredible special.

If you love the podcast and you have a few bucks a month that you can spare, please show your support for the Voice of independent Celtic music online. Become a Patron of the Podcast or even a Song Henger. All you need to do is pledge as little as $1 per episode.

Make a pledge right now: http://celticmusicpodcast.com/patreon/

CELTIC PODCAST HOMEPAGE UPDATED

CELTIC MUSIC SPOTLIGHT RETURNS?

I started the Celtic Music Spotlight as a weekly video show earlier this summer. I ran into a few problems with the content. So it's been on hiatus. Last week, I revamped it. I'm gonna try and get it back up and running for you every Thursday.

Check it out: http://celticmp3s.com/celtic-music-spotlight/

OH! If I have not responded to you. PLEASE RE-EMAIL ME. I need your help and these bands want your reviews.

4 CELTIC KICKSTARTERS

I was checking out Kickstarter the other day and I found a bunch of cool Celtic projects that need your support.

Na Seudan Project - . Na Seudan is an all-girl Gaelic and Traditional folk group from Tarbert, Loch Fyne aged 14-18 years. They are trying to raise just £750 and still have 30 days remaining in their campaign. Imagine how cool it would be if you could help blow their expectations far, far past £750!

Bring Irish Dance to the Dominican Republic! - Elyse Transon is working with ASTEP (Artists Striving to End Poverty) and the Mariposa Foundation to bring Irish Dance to Cabarete, DR. With 5 days to go, she only needs about $400.

Celtic Art Wall Calendar - This calendar is actually fully funded with just 9 days to go. But there's some beautiful knotwork and imagery. I thought you might enjoy it.

Alba's Edge New Album - Alba's Edge is a sibling-led musical powerhouse bridging the gap between Scottish fiddle traditions, Jazz improvisation, Latin rhythms and Funk grooves. Co-led by Neil and Lilly Pearlman, the quartet has been gradually evolving and honing our sound over the past 4 years. Now that Lilly has graduated we are finally ready to take the next step: writing and recording our first full length album! The album is currently fully funded with just 56 hours to go.

Click the links and see if you are willing to help these great Celtic Kickstarters!

Celtic Music Magazine is the official newsletter of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast.  It is a 2-3 times per month publication of Celtic music, news and culture by Celtic musician and podcast host, Marc Gunn. We want to change your world with Celtic music!

Greetings

Welcome to the first ever #CelticThursday.

I was doing some research on Google Trends last week when I realized that the number of people searching for Celtic music has declined over the last six years. Why is that? Are fewer people searching for "Celtic music" on Google? Has social media usurped the way we find Celtic music? Or has Celtic music and culture declined in popularity over the past few years since the heyday of when Celtic Woman and Celtic Thunder dominated the PBS airwaves?

I don't know the answer to these questions, but it made me realize that we can do more to promote Celtic music, dance, art, and culture. Thus was born #CelticThursday.

We all have our favorite websites, bands, artists, dancers that we follow. I want to know what yours are. But I don't want you to just email me this info. Instead, go to your favorite social network and share it. Use the hashtag #CelticThursday so other people can find see your favorites too.

Not only will you help out your favorite Celtic groups and individuals online, but you'll also help us to grow our Celtic culture.

What are you waiting for? Head on over to Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Tumblr, Instagram, YouTube or another social media site and SHARE!

JOIN OUR 20 PATRONS OF THE PODCAST

I want to thank the twenty generous patrons keep this podcast running each and every week. Thanks to your friendly help, I will release a two-hour Celtic Music special feature of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast next Wednesday. If we can raise $16 more per episode, I can start work on a two-hour bagpipe extravaganza!

CELTS ON KICKSTARTER

Want to help out some of your fellow Celts? Here's a few more cool Celtic Kickstarters.

The Cave Sessions - Live Music Recorded In Irish Caves - 3000 years ago an on-the-run musician wrote songs while hiding in caves. His lyrics survived - we're recording them in an Irish cave!

McTavish the Haggis - McTavish the Haggis leaves his Scottish glen for a dream, meets new friends and discovers his own special ability to get home again. This is a story worth telling. It was written by published poet and native Scotsman, Norrie Smith who came to the states in 1977 after attending the Duncan Jordanstone College of Art and Design. Now deceased, Norrie wrote McTavish for his sons.

2 Hours of Great Celtic Music!

Greetings

Something amazing happened last week. I published the 2 Hours of Celtic Music special on the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. The show is thanks to the generosity of the 29 Patrons of the Podcast. Two days after that show went live, we reached the next Milestone--2 Hours of Bagpipe Music!

Wow, that's amazing! I'm overwhelmed and extremely grateful to each of my Patrons. I'm gonna start planning the bagpipe show right now. I plan to release it on November 5th. Thanks to each of you who made it possible.

You can become a patron and support the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. It costs just $1 an episode. That's less than one Starbucks coffee each month. Go to http://celticmusicpodcast.com/patreon/ to find out more. Plus, you'll enjoy some secret, exclusive, bonus content.

On a separate note, I added a couple new features in this issue. One is highlighting Celtic Travel desitinations. The other highlights Celtic festivals around the world. Is that something that interests you? Reply and Let me know. I want to make this magazine more engaging than ever for you!

CELTIC MUSIC SPOTLIGHT FEEDBACK REQUESTED

I spent the last few weeks recording the Celtic Music Spotlight. The show is getting better, but admittedly, it's is not getting many views.

If you're not familiar with it, the show is a news-style video for my many Celtic websites. I let you know what's new with the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast and the Celtic Music Magazine. I spotlight a Celtic band along with interesting facts about the band. And I offer random tidbits of news.

You can watch episodes at http://celticmp3s.com/spotlight/. I like the idea of promoting indie Celtic bands through the spotlight. But if it doesn't interest you, there's no point doing it.

Let me know what you think of the show. Do you watch it? Do you just not have time to watch the 3 minute show? Or do you have no interest? Please let me know. Thanks!

13-168 Donegal Castlle

CELTIC TRAVEL: DONEGAL CASTLE

Guarding a picturesque bend of the River Eske, Donegal Castle remains an imperious monument to both Irish and English might. Built by the O'Donnells in 1474, it served as the seat of their formidable power until 1607, when the English decided to rid themselves of pesky Irish chieftains once and for all. Rory O'Donnell was no pushover, though, torching his own castle before fleeing to France in the infamous Flight of the Earls. Their defeat paved the way for the Plantation of Ulster by thousands of newly arrived Scots and English Protestants, sowing the seeds of the divisions that still afflict Ireland to this day.

The castle was rebuilt in 1623 by Sir Basil Brooke, along with the adjacent three-storey Jacobean house. Further restoration in the 1990s has made it a wonderfully atmospheric place to visit, with rooms furnished with French tapestries and Persian rugs. There are guided tours every hour.

Celtic Halloween and Bagpipes A-Coming!

Greetings

Last week, I had my first every Celtic Halloween Music Show on Google Hangouts. It was a wonderful success. A couple dozen people showed up for the live performance and over 200 have now watched it on YouTube. The concert was sponsored by my personal patrons. Yes, I have two Patreon accounts now. One for my music and one for the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast.

I want to send out a HUGE thanks to the, now, 40 Patrons of the Podcast. These are the folks who are sponsoring the show each and every week. You are the reason I continue to work my butt off to get the show done every Monday so I can share the podcast with over 10,000 people around the world, every week.

The comments from the show continue to come in on the website. You can now listen to the podcast straight from the homepage at www.celticmusicpodcast.com. LJ nominated show #177 for the best episode of the year. I LOVE to hear that!

In the next couple months, I'm gonna take your nominations for best music of 2014, because I REALLY want a Best Celtic Music of 2014 episode. But I can only do it with your votes and suggestions.

Of course, that's a BIG challenge for this year. I have never released so many episodes as I have done in 2014. So you have a WIDE pick of songs to choose from.

I will announce more on that at the end of November.

In the meantime, stay tuned. Next week, I will have a Celtic Halloween special on the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast, and then, thanks again to our Patrons, you'll get a two-hour Bagpipe Music special on November 5th!

INTRODUCING CELTIC MUSIC JOURNAL

The guys over at 67Music.net have done something extraordinary. They launched a brand new Celtic TV series called The Celtic Music Journal. This is a brilliant idea. Imagine America's Funniest Home Videos with Celtic Music. Well, maybe that's not a good analogy, because it's NOT comedy. It's awesome Celtic music!

Basically, you send Sk0t and Steve your Celtic music videos that you shot over the past week or year. They then merge it into a 30-minute show along with interviews, and lots and lots of great Celtic music.

I love this idea so much that I plan to promote this through my Celtic Music Spotlight channel on YouTube.

You can watch past episodes of the Celtic Music Journal at http://67music.net/celtic-music-journal/

Jesse Ferguson - The Butcher Boy

CELTIC SPOTLIGHT INTERVIEWS JESSE FERGUSON

As for my own Celtic Music Spotlight, I decided to try something new. Tomorrow morning at 8:30 AM CST, I'm gonna do my first every live streaming interview. This will be with Jesse Ferguson, known as the Bard of Cornwall.

Jesse is a Celtic musician and songwriter from Ontario, Canada who is quite successful with his own YouTube channel where he teaches people how to play some traditional and original Celtic songs.

If you have any questions for Jesse, email them immediately, or visit watch the show live tomorrow morning at http://marcgunn.com/youtube/.

Ards Forest Park is a park in County Donegal, Ireland. It is situated on the small Ards Peninsula. It sits on the shores of Sheephaven Bay on the northern coastline of County Donegal, Ireland.

It was formerly part of the Ards Estate, a country estate purchased by Alexander Stewart in the 1780s and was owned by the Stewart family up until the early 1930s. Today, the forest park is 481 hectares in area and contains a range of wildlife and plant forms. It also has nature walks, sandy beaches, viewing points as well as a picnic and play area.

Ards Forest Park has many features of historical and archaeological interest. The remains of four ringforts and a number of megalithic tombs are to be seen in the park. Legend has it that these were the beds of Diarmuid and Gráinne in their flight from Fionn Mac Cumhaill. There is also a well called the Ague Well, which is alleged to be holy and have remedial powers; it can be seen on Bealach na hArdaigh walk. On the same walk there is a mass rock. Mass was celebrated here in defiance of the Penal Laws. There is also a car park and a children's play area.

Another Celtic Music Milestone Reached!

Greetings

Did you catch the TWO-HOUR Bagpipe music special?

I'm still getting emails about how great that show was. I think we can officially call it a hit. Thanks again to all of my Patrons of the Podcast who made it happen.

It turns out, shortly after that show was released, the next Patron Milestone was reach. That means, you can expect a two-hour Celtic Rock special to come out on December 3rd. Wow! You people rock! THANK YOU!

It makes me wonder. What kind of music special would YOU like? What kind of show would inspire you to become a Patron of the Podcast? Drop me an email. Let me know.

I'm in Louisiana performing for all six weekends of the Renaissance festival this week. The last two weekends were great. Normally, I drive back to Birmingham when the weekend is over. But this week, I stayed to perform for their Student Days events. My shows are going great. The only downside to the week is the internet. I forget how much I rely on high-speed internet. I upload a LOT of large music files, videos, and more. I've barely been able to do that. I feel like I'm on dialup. It is so frustrating.

Needless to say, this week's episode feels a little rough. I recorded the show outside PJ's Coffee (best coffee EVER) in Hammond, and then mixed and uploaded the show while I was there. The show came off a bit shorter than the hour I prefer. I can make it almost perfectly 60 minutes at home, but not such this week.

You can listen to it here: http://celticmusicpodcast.com/182

Ah well. The struggles of being a touring musician AND a podcaster. I hope you enjoy the show. There's a LOT of great music to enjoy!

Buncrana is a town in County Donegal, Ireland. It is beside Lough Swilly on the Inishowen peninsula. It is the historic home of the O'Doherty clan and originally developed around the defensive tower known as O'Doherty's Keep at the mouth of the River Crana.

Swan Park is a short walk from the centre of town and follows the Crana river. It enjoy a peaceful wooded walk. Be amazed and wowed by the beautiful old stone bridges, the history of O'Doherty's keep - a medieval house, and the charming Buncrana Castle.

CELTIC CHRISTMAS PODCAST KICKS OFF A NEW SEASON

I launched the first episode of the Celtic Christmas Podcast of the 2014 season on Friday. The 2-hour bagpipe music show was such a big hit, I decided to feature Bagpipe Celtic Christmas music.

As always, the show is 100% free. But my Patrons got a sneak peak before anyone else. So thank you Patrons for supporting the show. In fact, they got a sneak peak of another new podcast just today. I'll tell you more about it in a moment.

In the meantime, there are 37 episodes of the Celtic Christmas Podcast. That's 37 different ways that you can relax and enjoy all of the great varieties of Celtic Christmas music. More are coming. There's an episode from Celt in a Twist, episodes of the Pub Songs Podcast, and I'm planning at least three new, exclusive Celtic Christmas Podcasts each and every Friday.

Go to http://CelticChristmasPodcast.com to find out more about the shows.

You can subscribe on iTunes or other podcatchers as well. Feel free to rate the podcast while you're there.

CD SHIPPING FOR JUST 1 PENNY

This is big! CD Baby is offering shipping for just ONE CENT from December 1st through 3rd. Best of all, you can ship CDs at that low price to ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD.

Yes. It's true! They've never done this before. But they are dedicated to helping indie musicians sell CDs. They decided to swallow the cost for just three days.

This is a great time to order a copy of A Celtic Christmas, the Celtic Christmas compilation CD that I released last year. It got some great reviews. It's also highly ranked on iTunes and Amazon. There's a bunch of awesome bands on it too including Mithril, Jed Marum, Rathkeltair, The Gothard Sisters, and many more. Check it out at http://celticmusic.org/ACelticChristmas

If that's not your cup of tea, or you already own... I HAVE A NEW CD... slash Greeting Card.

The Kickstarter for my Celtic Christmas Greeting Cards was a success. I'm getting a lot of great comments about the album. I did my best to make it fit what I consider Celtic Christmas music. It's a fun CD.

You can order the album by itself as CD or on iTunes and Amazon, OR you can order a bunch of CDs and mail them as greeting cards. Find them all right here: http://celticmusic.org/CelticChristmasGreetingCards

If you'd rather have traditional Irish Christmas Cards, I have some of those left over from last year too. http://celticmusic.org/IrishChristmasCards

NEW PODCAST IN 2015 -- CELTIC INTERVIEWS

Yesterday, I did an interview with my friend Jamie Haeuser. She and I recorded How America Saved Irish Music together. That interview solidified an idea I've thought about for a while.

I'm gonna start a new podcast to highlight all of the cool Celtic interviews I've done.

There are a lot. I'm gonna put them all in ONE podcast feed. As I record more, I will release them slowly into the feed. As I record more podcasts, I'll release those as well. You'll hear interviews from Celtic musicians as well as Celtic people from around the world. I think you'll love it.

The podcast won't start until January 2015. So hang in there. I have a lot of prep work to do first. However, IF you are a Patron of the Podcast, you can listen to the first interview today. Become a patron at http://celticmusicpodcast.com/patreon/

BEST CELTIC MUSIC OF 2014 -- POLLS WILL OPEN SOON

The Best Celtic Music of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast will be back in 2015. In fact, I've worked out a plan on how to make that happen. I will need your votes in December. Stay tuned for more details.

Two Happy Celtic Christmas Shows

Nollaig Shona Daoibh

We're just over a week away from Christmas. I am finishing up my last minute promotions before my family and I leave for the holiday. So this is the last episode of the Magazine for the year.

I published the first of two Celtic Christmas specials on the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. The first features a bunch of new Celtic Christmas music. The second, which will be out on Christmas Eve, features a quiet evening of Celtic Christmas tunes. You can listen to the first show right here: http://celticmusicpodcast.com/187

Since I'll be gone for a while, I'm starting to work on the last episode of the year too. This will be a New Years Eve episode. But ye know what, Patrons of the Podcast can download and enjoy these shows BEFORE the holiday begins. All three will be released to my Patrons and Song Hengers by this Friday.
