Greetings Celtic Music Lovers,

I hope you had a great holiday and a fantastic year. I sure did.

Last year, we changed the name of the magazine to the Celtic Music Magazine. We added a bunch of new reviewers to our team. We restarted the free Celtic MP3s that originally launched this magazine. We also celebrated our Celtic music culture and diaspora.

In 2012, we will continue to celebrate our heritage. I want to build our Celtic community bigger and stronger than ever.

To that end, I will continue to publish our award-winning Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. I am also enlisting the aid of a few Celtic musicians to blog about their music, community, and experiences around the country.

I want your involvement. So drop by the website. Join our facebook community. Post a comment. Let’s make 2012 our biggest year yet.

Slainte!

Greetings Celtic Music Lovers,

St. Patrick’s Day is less than two weeks away. I will perform in downtown Birmingham for Shamrockin’ in Five Points. It’s organized by the Alabama Celtic Association, of which I am now a board member.

Joining the board of your local Celtic organization is a great way to get involved in your Celtic community. Believe it or not, your involvement is the first step to making your community strong and vibrant. That’s because people are always saying, “I wish…”. It is only through our actions that those wishes are fulfilled. So get involved today.

How do you plan to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day?

Greetings Celtic Music Lovers,

I just returned from a spectacular five days in Ireland with my family. It's not often I get a personal vacation. This was a rare joy.

We drove to Galway where we stayed three nights. We visited Kylemore Abbey and the Cliffs of Moher. In the evening, we stopped off at a couple pubs on Quay Street to catch some traditional Irish music. My daughter Kenzied danced along in blissful, exhausted delight.

Back to Dublin for two nights, we visited Newgrange and spent a tiny bit o'time on Grafton Street.

The highlights were the family time. Like as we watched Kenzie try to climb ALL the steps up to the top of the Cliffs. Or when we took a brief break in Kinvara to visit the local farmer's market.

When it comes to traveling, I'm a firm believer that it's not about the sights you see. Sure, the Cliffs are specatacular to behold. Rather, it is the people you see them with that make the trip magical.

The magic will be revisited in a couple more weeks. I join my extended family for another Celtic Invasion Vacation. I shall invade Galway once again with a large group ready to experience the magic of Ireland with good food, good drink, and good company.

I can't wait! Slainte!

Can Indie Irish Celtic Music Top the Charts?

Have you ever watched your favorite Celtic band try to top the charts?

Topping the charts is not an easy thing to do. My old group, the Brobdingnagian Bards, was able to do it once on CD Baby. We promoted our CD Brobdingnagian Fairy Tales. At the end of the week, we broke #1 on the entire website. We were ecstastic. CD Baby is the largest online retailer for indie music. I've never been able to duplicate that mission. But I'm ready to try.

This time, I'm not promoting one band. I'm promoting two: FIMM and Poitin. These are two of the hottest indie Celtic bands on the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. I love their music so much, I decided to create a special compilation CD featuring just their music called Irish Celtic Music. The album is now on sale.

I want you to buy this album,
but please don't buy it yet!

You see, I decided to help these bands Top the Charts.I am asking people to Buy just ONE SONG from the CD. The song by Poitin is named "Memories of Ireland". It's a beautiful track that will get your blood pumping.

Heck, the whole album will do that, but again, I just want you to buy the one tune on a specific date--Wednesday, May 23rd.

There are 22,000 people on this mailing list. If even one percent of you bought this one 99 cent tune on May 23rd, that song would be #1 on both iTunes and Amazon. That would mean greater visibility for the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. It would mean more fans for FIMM and Poitin. And it would show the world that Celtic music is something that is loved on more than just St. Patrick's Day. It's something we Celts hold in our hearts all year long.

I won't kid you. This is not an easy task. But I firmly believe that together we can get enough people to buy that one song on Amazon or iTunes that we can tear up the charts and show the world that there's something much better than American Idol, Carrie Underwood, Adele, B.o.B., and Silversun Pickups. (I have no idea who most of those folks are, but they have top 10 singles on iTunes)

What does it take to help?

It only takes 99 cents. Or just share this idea with your friends on your social networks. Just tell your friends to go to

http://www.celticmusicpodcast.com/topthecharts/

Ask them to share the link with their friends. Invite them to join the mailing list there. Share. Share. Share.

It doesn't take 20,000 people to make a hit. A tenth of that on one day would obliterate the competition.

You can give back to your love of Celtic music. Help us Top the Charts!

Find out more here.

Cooling Down with Celtic Music

CELTIC MUSIC MAGAZINE
The Home of Indie Celtic Music Online
July 2012 -- 21,000+ subscribers

Greetings My Celtic Friend,

Man, the heat is overbearing here in Birmingham, Alabama. I really miss
being in Galway where I was at the beginning of June. The weather was
cool with a wee bit o'rain. It was a wonderful break from the heat. And
I miss my fellow Celtic Invaders. I had a blast sitting in the parlor
of that castle, drinking cold beer and playing music. Now it's just
hot.

Today, I took my daughter to the Birmingham Zoo to cool off. We visited
the wild cats, tigers and lions. Then we made our way to the kids area.
They have an awesome fountain for kids to play in. I tore off my shoes
and dipped them in the cool water as Kenzie plopped down into the very
same puddle. The heat disappeared.

It's funny that summer is a big festival season. I know it's the time
of the summer vacations. But in the South, it's hot. Am I alone in
thinking this is a horrible time to be out in heat. Does great Celtic
music cool you off? Or is it just the cold Guinness that makes you
forget?

In fact, I'd love to hear your own Celtic festival stories. Wanna share
one in the Celtic Music Magazine blog? Write up your review of the
latest Celtic festival you went to and email it to me.

Celtic Freedom Playlist
July always seems like a month of freedom and independence to me.
That's due in part to the 4th of July--Independence Day in the States.
But it's also because I quit my day job on July 8, 2005. That was a
monumental day in my life, when I finally fulfilled my dream of
becoming a full-time musician. I never looked back. For that reason, I
decided to compile a Celtic Freedom Playlist.

Each month, I compile a new playlist of music to share on the Celtic
Music Magazine website. It's a bit different from the Irish & Celtic
Music Podcast playlists. I have a library of over 12,000 Celtic songs
and tunes. They are not all indie Celtic music which is all I am
allowed to play in the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast
<http://celticmusicpodcast.com/> . Instead this playlist is themed from
my complete catalog.

August will be Gaelic month. I had a request for some Gaelic songs on
the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. I'd like to know what are you
favorite Gaelic songs or tunes named in Gaelic? Send 'em to me and I'll
compile another great playlist to share with you in August.

Sponsor Celtic Music Is Freedom
I have a new CD coming out this Fall. This album features a bunch of
traditional Celtic songs. Right now, it looks like there will be about
15-20 tracks from "Whiskey in the Jar" to "Danny Boy" to "Drunken
Sailor" to "May Morning Dew" to "Old Dun Cow." It's a fresh, fun look at
the Celtic songs I love.

Like many indie Celtic musicians, I'm trying to raise money to pay for
the album. It's gonna cost me about $4000. I raised about $500 thusfar.
So I have quite a ways to go. If you wanna feel helpful, make a
donation.

If you do donate, I have some cool bonus gifts, like limited-edition
t-shirts, autographed and numbered CDs, and even a lifetime memership
to Song Henge, the fan club of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. Please
make a donation on my website

Greetings My Celtic Friend,

Summer is almost over. The kids are back in school. The weather is cooling down. And the best Celtic festivals are kicking off.

It's tough hosting festivals in the summer. The Texas Scottish Festival moved to early May this year, and I don't blame them. It was a hot summer. The only reason NOT to do a show in the Spring or Fall is to avoid all the other festivals doing the same.

Thankfully, when I go to Sherwood Celtic Music Festival in a few weeks and then Stone Mountain Highland Games a month later, the weather should be great. I'm performing at both those festivals. Look for me doing interviews as well.

I want to thank everyone who helped support my fundraiser for my next CD, "Not Every Day Is St. Patrick's Day" (formerly known as "Celtic Music Is Freedom"). It was an amazing event. I easily acheived my goal. The album will come out officially on January 17, 2013.

ARE YOU A CELTIC GEEK TOO?

I have a confession. I am a Celtic Geek. I love Celtic music and culture. That's why I publish this magazine and my award-winning podcast. However, I also love science fiction and fantasy. That's why I record songs about hobbits, Firefly, Star Wars, Dr. Who, dragons, and cats.

(Okay. Cats might not see to Sci Fi like until you've seen the art of Sarah Clemens (http://www.clemensart.com/). She's a brilliant fantasy artist who combines cats and dragons.)

But that's really not what I was talking about. I was actually talking about filk music. Yes. I spelled that right--F-I-L-K.

If you like novelty music, you might already know what filk is. Some would call it Sci Fi folk music. That's where it's origins lie. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filk_music) In addition to songs with Sci Fi topics, it also includes things like parodies. Take for instance my "Irish Drinking Songs for Cat Lovers" CD series. That's filk music to the core--Irish songs rewritten about cats.

It's not just about cats though. It's about the fusion. My music is 20th century music for 23rd century people. It's sci fi drinking songs. It's everything that is fun about Celtic music.

As I travel the world from Celtic festivals to Renaissance festivals to science fiction conventions, I see more and more Celtic Geeks. Folks who love their sci fi and who love their Celtic music. I'm not entirely sure how many of us Celtic Geeks are out there. But I'd love to meet you. Drop me a line and tell me, "I'm a Celtic Geek too!"

Greetings My Celtic Friend,

I hope you had a wonderful Samhain and Halloween. Once again, I took my, now two-year old, daughter Kenzie trick-or-treating. She was dressed as the most adorable Tinker Bell with our own unique design. It was beautiful, and also fitting after a we visited the Stone Mountain Highlands. It turns out Tinker Bell is Scottish. She's a registered member of Clan Bell. Who woulda thought?

I had a great time at the Stone Mountain Highland Games. I shared the stage with a great Scottish folksinger, Colin Grant-Adams. He's been on the Highland Games circuit for decades. And I was really excited to learn he was from Oban, Scotland. I led a Celtic Invasion there a few years back.

When I wasn't visiting my clan, I spent a little time talking with Neil of Rathkeltair. There's not a better group of Celtic rockers out there. Good people with great music. It was nice catching up with them and their stage-mates Gael Warning.

Spending more time in the Celtic community really got me thinking about community. I was reminded just how important it is for us to promote our culture. So I'm happy the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast was able to support the games.

Do you have a favorite Highland Games? Share it on the blog.

- Tell your friends to vote too.

Music podcasts are one of the popular categories in the Podcast Awards. There are some heavy hitters in that genre. It will take all your help for us to win another will. So please cast your vote, then tell a friend.

Greetings My Celtic Friend,

It's hard to believe we are less than two weeks until Christmas. I feel like I'm barely prepared for the holiday. In fact, I enlisted the help of Mattie Dalton to help me get things rolling with the Celtic Music Magazine to keep it growing. I'm super pleased to welcome Mattie as my Assistant Editor. Maybe I'll be able to get this 'zine out on a regular basis.

In the meantime, here's your last-minute reminder to buy Celtic for Christmas. There are a lot of great Celtic stores, business, and of course musicians selling their wares. When you buy Celtic, it's sorta like buying Local, except your supporting your cultural heritage and community.

If you're looking for some cool Celtic gifts, I have three articles that just might help ye out.

- Holiday Gift Guide: Support The Celtic Musicians and Crafters Edition
http://celticmp3s.com/2012/holiday-gift-guide-support-the-celtic-musicians-and-crafters-edition/
- Irish Fireside Holiday Gift Guide
http://irishfireside.com/2012/11/28/the-irish-fireside-holiday-gift-guide/

There's also a great new article called "Christmas of the Celts".

CELTIC CHRISTMAS PODCAST
http://www.celticchristmaspodcast.com/
The Celtic Christmas Podcast is a cool project I started a few years ago. I invite all Celtic podcasters online to submit their Celtic Christmas shows to the podcast feed. Then every few days in December a new Celtic Christmas show goes into the feed for you to enjoy. This year, I started the Celtic Christmas Exclusive. It's a new 30-minute show exclusively released through the Celtic Christmas Podcast feed. I should have one or two more Exclusive shows before the season ends.

Thusfar, I've only had one guest Celtic podcast this year, but I'm hoping to get a few last minute submissions. Hopefully, I'll be able to get them online before the season ends. If not, I will release them next year. If you're a Celtic podcaster and want to share your Christmas show, email me at editor@celticmp3s.com.
